3/2/2024 0 Comments Top 10 countdownsJust beware, the internet loves to complain and some people will just go out of their way to criticize you, even if all you’re doing is having fun. However, you don’t ever need to justify your list to anyone. If you intentionally exclude some entry, it might be worth explaining why and you may also use it as a way of handing out honourable mentions. However, I like to at least give my readers some clue about how the list has been constructed. While I enforce certain criteria frequently in my lists, ultimately what you want to include on a list is completely up to you. Step-4: Criteria aren’t important, but they help. And as mentioned before, you don’t need to force entries on your list, only include them if youdeem them worthy. Never the less, I’m always surprised that the best picks for the list often come to me as I’m thinking about it. What you ultimately deem as your number-1 pick doesn’t have to come to you in a flash and it’s also okay to take a step back, let the list rest for a while and come back to it later. This all depends on what you want to show with your list. In fact, if you keep gathering enough entries, your initial ones may not actually end up in the final list at all. Just because an entry only comes to you later doesn’t mean it’s less important. Indeed, your number-1 pick already be amongst the first few entries. They usually create the meat of the list and can work as a way of comparing with entries that come to you later. This helps you out a lot because there’s usually a reason those entries pop into your head. Step-3: Trust Your Instincts!Īfter choosing what I want to make a List of, my first step is to get a piece of paper and write down the first entries that pop in my head. The number of entries has nothing to do with the validity of the list and you don’t have to force in entries you don’t really want. If you’re making a list of your favourite restaurants but you can only think of eight, then make a Top-8. In any case, don’t ever feel that your hands are tied as to the number of items. 10 is also a good number just because past it, a list can start to get long and diluted. I usually avoid going for any list lower than 5 because I feel it might be a little on the short side and unless I have a good reason (such as a lack of suitable entries), I try not to make lists frequently with less than 10 items. The top-half is usually a cut above the rest, but the other five items are also important to me but don’t need to be as flawless in my eyes as the top-half. I have always favoured the Top-10 structure myself, because essentially it’s just two Top-5 lists put together. This isn’t to say that the number of items on your list is entirely inconsequential or arbitrary, just that you don’t have to forceyourself to come up with enough entries. A countdown can be as many items long as you wish. If you find yourself stuck you should remember this often ignored bit of wisdom: a countdown list doesn’t have to be a Top-10. One of the most annoying things about making any list is coming up with enough entries to fill it. It’s not important if it’s a list of your favourite socks or favourite slow-mo shots of Milla Jovovich, just as long as it’s something that you care about. In fact, the more unique your list is the better in my view. Don’t make a Top-10 of something that you don’t particularly care about just because someone else made a similar list. Whatever you do, don’t force yourself into making a list you don’t really care about. The important thing is to think of something that is essentially a part of you and your interests. Now a generic list of your favourite action or horror films or maybe video-games of a certain distinction are just as fine as anything else. Essentially, just think of something you love and know as well as something you know a lot about. Making a good list starts with a good idea. Let’s get to it… Step-1: Think of a Good List! These are instructions for how to make a Top-10 or any other kind of list of your very own. I’ve always wanted to let people see into the List/Countdown creation process and so I decided I would do it in the form of a list.
